I had never done any form of martial arts before last week, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had a great time and learned a lot in one day! I was able to watch demonstrations and practice the moves. I learned a new way of looking at energy that I could apply to my life and made a new friend in the process. Thank you, James!
Hello Kathleen,
I was happy to see you come to class ready to learn Wing Chun. You worked well with the other student present and you were quick to learn the moves and techniques and were very responsive to the different energy types. It is a pleasure to train you.

I always have a blast when training with James. He is the perfect balance of an informative and decisive instructor as well as a friend I can share a laugh with. He always knows just how to get the technique across the learning curve and just when you need that challenge to spur you further. The lessons I learn from him carry forward through out the training as well as apply to other disciplines I endeavor in. To sum up, James is an inspiration. Thank You James!

Hi, My name is Darren Laing. I've just completed the Level I Basics training sessions. This is an excellent opportunity to learn self defense techniques, and to understand the philosophy behind traditional martial arts such as Kung Fu and JKD!

Darren Laing ~
James is a great instructor. I truly enjoyed learning about methods for deflecting against an attack from a more powerful opponent. It was also great to learn about the history of the martial arts techniques we practiced. Thanks a lot James!!
Hello Darren,
Thank you for being a great student. The Art Of Deflection is one of the most important tools in the Art Of Defense. All things require a solid foundation of philosophy and roots to grow from.

HELLO DRAGON JAMES FELL!
IN PEACE THERE'S NOTHING SO BECOMES A MAN AS MODEST STILLNESS AND HUMILITY; BUT WHEN THE BLAST OF WAR BLOWS IN OUR EARS,THEN IMITATE THE ACTION OF THE " DRAGON "; STIFFEN THE SINEWS, SUMMON UP THE BLOOD, DISGUISE FAIR NATURE WITH HARD FAVOUR'D RAGE.
DRAGON JAMES FELL, I AM PROUD TO CALL YOU FRIEND!

Jason Dziuk ~
I am about midway in Level I of James' training, and already I can appreciate the difference
in the teaching of a philosophy from the standard teaching of an art. I have 5-6 years of
martial arts training, mostly in Wushu and TKD (WTF-style), and have become accustomed to
knowing and practicing a response to any given action. Art Of Defense, though, teaches
thoughts and values to be applied to the situation, and provides a number of actions for
these values to act through to meet your objective, which is never one of "DESTROY!"
as is the case with some arts (and I will admit, was much of the allure of martial arts for
me). Maybe I'm just growing up, but James' teaching seem more wise, practical, and
abstracted from the "heat of the moment" than those I have come to know in the past.
Hello Jason,
Thank you for visiting the site and posting a GREAT comment. I'm glad you see a difference between different types of training. Your ability to see that will make you a more well rounded martial artist who will be able to easily adapt to any situation. I look forward to your completion of Level I and your advancement into Level II.

Teresa Ming ~
James is an excellent instructor and has enhanced my martial arts knowledge with a completely different style from the full contact of Tae Kwon Do and Karate I am used to, with that of the more cognitive and deliberate styles of Wing Chun and Art of Deflection. He is extremely knowledgeable in a wide range of self defense disciplines and the time training with him is well spent.
Hello Teresa,
Thank you for the excellent comments. Your previous training in the martial art Tae Kwon Do and Karate is doing you well in your Art Of Defense training. I'm sure you will develop well in your confidence, enlightenment and power.

Adam Fox ~
James is a fantastic teacher in the Art of Defense. His knowledge and ability to apply these principles is both fun and informative. He works with my wife and two boys on how to protect ourselves from a dangerous situation and protect us from bodily harm. I enjoy the intensive training and information that he imparts on us.
Hello Adam,
Thank you for joining the Art Of Defense and leaving a great comment. The world today is not the same as sweet America used to be. There is a lot of violence and desperation now days and you're smart to want to be prepared for any emergency what ever it may be.

Hello Gus,
Thank you for your comment. And your are right about taking responsibility. Because we have power that others do not, we must be careful not to fight whenever possible, else using power can corrupt.

Hello Gus,
One of my recent tweets on twitter says…
Teach your students to develop their art unique to themselves. ~ The Teacher
During the basics, and the advanced, and in to the custom designed lessons, the student will learn the art so that the art and the student are uniquely one, different than all the rest.
As I did and I am myself, and is one of the teachings and comments of Bruce Lee.
And all ancient, current and wise philosophies from around the world since the beginning. As with anything and everything, even any animal or plant, something learned, realized or discovered, becomes uniquely part of oneself.
As no bird hunts for a worm exactly the same way. ~ The Teacher

Gary Castleberry ~
James, it was a pure pleasure meeting and speaking with you today. We share lots of the same mentality in fighting and life in general. Jeet Kune Do is not only for combat but also for daily living. Bruce Lee would be proud to know his concept of fighting and the JKD way of life is being carried on by you and your students. So many miss the point of what Bruce Lee intended his JKD to be. Not a style, but a way of life and a concept that evolves as does life itself. I look forward to training with you sir. Keep up the great work.
Hello Gary,
Thank you for your kind words. I agree with you all the way. Everything we come in contact with through our journey of life is a learning experience that we can use to improve ourselves in order to live, get along with others, and be happy.
